Daughters of Sarah Senior Community has been meeting the changing needs of the Capital Region’s elderly since 1942 according to Jewish values and traditions.
Daughters of Sarah Senior Community is a Center of Excellence providing multi-level, resident-centered elder care in accordance with our Jewish values and traditions, with almost 70 years of service. We serve disabled and elderly men and women from all ethnic and religious backgrounds. The facility offers kosher meals, and provides areas for the consumption of non-kosher foods.
The Senior Community offers: Greatdays Medical Adult Day Care, assisted living in The Massry Residence, rehabilitation therapies for residents and for members of the outlying community, and outstanding 24-hour skilled nursing care in Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center, where all 210 residential rooms are private, with private bathrooms. The Nursing Center also features the Golub Family Memory Enhancement Center and Hospice at Daughters of Sarah. Respite care is available to offer Capital Region families breathing room from their caregiving responsibilities.
The Nursing Center is a recipient of the NYS Department of Health Resident Safety Award. Renovated in 2005, the Nursing Center presents a cozy, graciously appointed home-like environment in each of our three residential pavilions, offering dignity and privacy to our residents and their families.
Daughters of Sarah Senior Community is a member agency of the United Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York

Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We started in 1942 with 19 beds for elderly Jewish men and women who had no one to care for them. Community volunteers went door to door to raise the money to buy and renovate an existing home. Since then, we've moved twice as demand for our services grew. Our Nursing Center alone now has 210 beds, and we offer 56 beautiful, spacious assisted living one and two bedroom apartments with lots of natural light.
What is your primary product or service?
We are primarily a long-term care residential and therapeutic community. exist to care for elderly men and women who cannot be cared for at home. We have two levels of care: assisted living in The Massry Residence, and skilled nursing in the Nursing Center.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
It became clear to the Jewish community after the Depression that there were members of that community seriously at risk due to their advanced age or frailty, that we needed to make provision to care for them. That is still our mission.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We are the only kosher long-term care organization in upstate New York east of Rochester. We are also a faith-based, not-for-profit organization, which means that our bottom line is not established by shareholders with economic expectations, but by the larger Jewish community, who expect that we provide high-quality care according to our Jewish values and traditions.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Both of our present facilities and all of our services exist on our one beautiful campus in Albany, where we have been able to preserve much of our wilderness setting and to add to it protected wandering gardens with fruit trees, bushes, flowers, and where our residents can enjoy outdoor gardening activities according to their abilities. We expect that we will continuously expand our offerings and services but at present have no plans in place.
